“I am a scientist and I worked in the Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) in India. Later on I moved to USA and worked as senior research faculty in the field of cardiology at Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, for 10 years. During my career abroad, I played a vital role in discovering novel drugs against heart diseases. I have several scientific publications and patents in my field and my work has been well recognized by the scientists worldwide.
However, I felt guilty of the fact that most of my research knowledge was somehow not reaching the common public; instead it was benefiting profit minded multinational drug companies. Secondly, I realized that this kind of reductionist research approach was not addressing the real root cause of the disease; rather it was giving a palliative or temporary relief to patients with unwanted side effects. Therefore, I decided to use my scientific experience and knowledge in a field where it would directly benefit the society in finding permanent cure to human diseases. The primary root cause of all modern human diseases is the quality and type of the food we eat and the life style we lead.
In modern agricultural practices, plants are grown using high amount of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and other artificial growth promoters to achieve higher yield. This is a highly unsustainable practice which results in pollution of the soil and water bodies; affecting various life forms in the soil as well as in the water. The food produced from such fields is contaminated with high amount of chemical residues. Consumption of such food results in bio accumulation of these toxic chemicals in the body overwhelming the normal detoxification process and immune functions, leading to various diseases.
Then I realized the wisdom of traditional agriculture and medical practices in India where food is produced using indigenous crops being cultivated for several thousand years. These crops are tolerant to extreme climatic conditions and have unique medicinal properties. They are grown using all natural organic inputs such as fertilizer made out of cow dung, cow urine, cow milk, curd and local herbs. The food produced is rich in macro, micro nutrients and possesses several medicinal compounds which not only provide necessary energy to the body; but also enhance the immune system function. Good nutritious food is the foundation for good health. As the father of Western Medicine Hippocrates rightly said “Food is Medicine”.
Unfortunately, our indigenous seeds as well as traditional farming methods are at the verge of extinction with modern agricultural methods being used to produce high yields. Farmers use hybrid crop varieties, chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the name of green revolution to increase the national average production of grains without giving much attention to the negative effects on health and our environment. Many farmers are misled to ignore our environmental friendly and sustainable farming traditions and they adapt to modern agricultural practices to receive government incentives and attain higher profits.
After this realization I retuned back to India and started farming indigenous rice verities such as mapillai samba, kichili samba, karung kuruvai and Kala Namak as well as local herbs which are well known for their medicinal properties. I currently sell hand sowed, hand harvested and manually processed indigenous organic black gram and green gram. I am also working on developing few nutraceutical products from our farm grown produce. These natural health products will also be available soon.
I am fully satisfied with my decision of returning back to my own country and taking up traditional farming. I am happy that I am contributing to saving indigenous grains. I can finally use my scientific knowledge and experience to the benefit of our society and future generations.
