What is Aadhaar Card?

Aadhaar is a 12 digit individual identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India on behalf of the Government of India. This number will serve as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in India. Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident in India and satisfies the verification process laid down by the UIDAI can enrol for Aadhaar. Each individual needs to enroll only once which is free of cost. Each Aadhaar number will be unique to an individual and will remain valid for life. Aadhaar number will help you provide access to services like banking, mobile phone connections and other Govt and Non-Govt services in due course.

Aadhar card’ registration:

If you have not got your ‘Aadhar card’, please do not worry about it. The card can now be made at the Tehsil Headquarters without having undergone an entry to crowded camps for this purpose.

The government is soon going to open permanent center for the registration of such cards at each ‘Tehsil headquarter’. Once the registration is done, an individual will be entitled to receive the card at his residence, within a period of three months from the date of registration.

Addressing a recent gathering, the PM, Manmohan Singh said, “By 2014, 60 crore people in the country would get Aadhaar cards. The first card was issued at a tribal village in Maharashtra in December 2010. Now, it has become one of the biggest projects of its kind in the world.”

According to the Ministry of Information & Technology, Rajasthan has reached second stage of the nomination process for Unique Identification Number (UID-Aadhar cards). At least,1 crore people have been issued the Aadhar cards and 17 months hence, every individual in the state will hold an Aadhar card.

The UID will be used for making payments to beneficiaries under various government schemes, such as the rural job guarantee programme, public distribution system, social security pension schemes, LPG distribution scheme, the chief minister’s rural BPL housing and the chief minister’s higher education scholarship. The registration for an Aadhaar Card started in West Bengal recently starting from the employees of Kolkata Raj Bhavan. The other govt. employees will also be directed through respective department to apply for Aadhaar card very soon.

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has made it mandatory for every citizen of India. Accordingly UIDAI has signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Govt. of West Bengal regarding the matter.

Documents required for Aadhaar :

Following are the documents required for Aadhaar enrolment/registration.

  1. Filled Aadhaar Enrolment Form
  2. Proof of Identity (PoI) document
  3. Proof of Address (PoA) document
  4. Date of Birth (DoB) document

Except the Aadhaar enrolment form, you are required to take original or attested photocopies of the remaining three documents. The photocopies can be attested by any gazetted/notary officer.
